What is a Nectar Collector?

Nectar collectors are the ultimate one hitter for dabs. They consist of three main components: the tip, body and mouthpiece. The tip is made of glass, titanium or quartz, and is the only part of the collector that comes in direct contact with your concentrate. The mouthpiece is a removable glass extension much like the end of a chillum. The body of the collector may be a straight glass tube, or it may have a chamber with a percolator or diffuser in it.

The advantage over a dab rig is that nectar collectors are extremely efficient. Using a nectar collector is like sucking water through a straw. You only smoke what the tip comes in contact with, so there is little to no waste of your wax or oil, which you smoke out of a small glass dish. The biggest advantage, though, is that a nectar collector is the best way to get the best taste out of your concentrates. A nectar collector is definitely worth having in your arsenal.

Here’s How it Works

1. Fill it

If your collector has a chamber, start by filling it with water. Fill it halfway to start, then see what works best for you.

IMPORTANT: Filling your collector with water before putting the tip on is imperative so that water does not get trapped in the tip. Trapped water can cause cracking when it is heated up.

2. Connect it

Push the tip and mouthpiece in and turn it like tightening a lightbulb. The two parts “catch” each other and remain in place.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the tip is completely secure before you start to heat it up, otherwise it may fall out and burn you. Some kits have clips to attach the tip to the body.

3. Heat it

Hold the collector horizontally and heat the tip with your torch. Holding it horizontal keeps any oil or wax in the tip from leaking out. Excess heat causes cracking of the glass joint over time. It doesn’t need to be glowing red to work. Also, you’ll want to try different levels of heat with different types of concentrates, so experiment or ask your local budtender.

4. Smoke it

Touch the tip to the concentrate in the dish and draw in the smoke. Keep along the edges of the dish to keep the rest of your concentrate tasting good. If you start from the middle, you’ll burn the edges of the rest of your concentrate. Some smokers suggest drawing air through before you reach the oil in the dish.

5. Clean it

Let it cool first. Remove the tip and mouthpiece. Don’t force it. If it gets stuck, submerge the entire piece in a bowl of hot water and let it sit for a minute. That should do the trick. To empty the chamber of water, hold it over the sink and blow through it.
