Quick Hits Through The History of Hemp

Quick Hits Through The History of Hemp
Before multiple states started passing medical marijuana legislation and people started to look into getting nugs, hemp was the key crop for many farmers. Some historians have even linked the fibers of hemp as far as 7,000 BC in ancient China, Taiwan, and as far back as the Stone Age. Much like today, the fibers were woven to make a wide variety of things including clothes, shoes, strong ropes and so much more. More recent discoveries have led archeologists to find paper fibers made out of hemp dating back to the foundation of the Great Wall of China, giving the plant one of the biggest boosts in historical context to date. The ancient world wasn't the only place that held a great deal of hemp for a variety of reasons. The Greek civilization is widely known for inhaling vapors from the hemp-seeds as a recreational activity and in some cases a ritual that had near religious connotations. If that isn't enough history, consider that in the medieval period throughout Europe hemp was used in many baked goods, and soups. That's right, edibles were utilized in the time period and not just medical marijuana or nugs were utilized. Hemp moved from edible fare to being used for cloth and ropes for ships as famous as the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Christopher Columbus used the fibers to create some of the strongest ropes and textiles in the European countryside, where hemp was the go to plant to harvest in order to use for a great deal of functional options. With the plant and fibers moving forward to the new world, it is no wonder that North America started to cultivate the plant for a variety of tasks. Even the early settlers got on board with the plant in the 17th century, and up until around the mid 19th century even the White House Garden in the United States had hemp growing throughout. It wasn't until the 1930's that laws were passed to hinder the movement of marijuana, and hemp, and it has yet to recover fully. Hemp is a miracle plant that has been utilized throughout ancient and modern history, and yet many scholars try to omit it from the record, as if it is a bad thing. Those that are supportive of legislation for hemp growing and use, have a right to do so, as the plant provides a fiber that can rival most others, in versatility and cost.
