A Few Cloning Tips

Do you want faster roots when cloning? Here’s a few tips.

When I first started caring for my own clones, I would get roots in two weeks about 90% of the time. The method I used at the time was using the method of cutting lower laying branches from the plant I was getting ready to move into bloom. This is also useful to begin the lolly popping  process. I would cut them at a 45 degree angle and put them into a  pre-soaked  5.8 PH, Rock wool cube. I would put my cutting/cubes in a humidity dome with a mist of water (5.8 PH) with a 12’ T5 light right above it. I would check on clones twice a day to make sure the cubes are not drying out and the leaves are not wilting. When using this method, the clones would be ready to plant in coco about two week later. Unfortunately, this was taking too long and I wanted to get closer to a 100% success rate.

My new method is to take the same cuts off the plants as before to start the lolly popping process.  Before I put the cutting into the Rock wool, it gets a little more preparation. First, I cut the ends off the big main leaves.  This helps make room in the humidity dome as well as takes less energy for the clone to keep the leaf alive.  You don’t want to cut too much off because the leaf is how the clones will get nutrients.  Cut the tips off---just don’t cut it a 45 angle.  I also shave the stock (green part)  down to the hart (white part), then I dip in some cloning gel (I like Clonex) for about 15-30 seconds. Now my cutting is ready to go into the pre-soaked Rock wool.  This time, though, 5.8 PH water is not the only part of this step.  I use some sweetener and some mild nutrients in the 5.8 PH water. The very last thing I add is Co2. Now my clones are ready for coco in 7 days and I am at about 99% rate!

Mites! And Too Much Co2

Your Bud Ben from My House USA - 02/02/2012 - 11:29 am

Max, You nailed that one! That is the number one reason why you need to take the right steps when bring new clones into your grow area. I rushed it and I had to pay the price. The yellow spots are not eggs, just damage from the mites... I see a Mites Blog coming soon!

Sabrina, you can add to much Co2 in a way. The only thing that will happen if you use to much Co2 is you will be wasting it. Your plant can only use so much before it comes pointless to add more. If your using the Green Pads just follow the dirtections and if your using tanks, you better get yourself a meter. :)
